We’re excited to share that Chris Smith, Round River Mongolia Program Instructor, has been honored by our Mongolian partners, the Ulaan Taiga Special Protected Areas Administration (UTSPAA), as the American Teacher of the Darhad Valley. In recognition of his contributions, a profile of Chris was shared through the UTSPAA’s Facebook account as well as in the newspaper, Echo of the Taiga, distributed throughout the Darhad Valley.
Chris has served as an instructor with Round River for eight years and in collaboration with Mongolia Program Director, Badmaa Dovchin, he has helped shape the program’s research and objectives while creating deeply meaningful learning opportunities for students. Chris is a beloved member of the Round River Mongolia team and we’re delighted to see him recognized in the Darhad Valley for his contributions to teaching and conservation.
Chris Smith, nicknamed “Instructor Bob,” was born in the rainy coastal forests of western Washington. His mother was an elementary school Physical Education teacher and his father was a computer engineer. Bob grew up with his brother, Tim, wandering through the forests and marsh around his house, soon becoming involved in a nature school called Wilderness Awareness. As a kid, he met other people who loved following animal tracks, identifying birds, and studying plants. One of Bob’s favorite things was to sit still under a huge tree in his backyard for an hour each evening and listen and observe the birds, plants, and animals around him as he tried to tune into his senses and not think.
Bob went to school in Bremerton, Washington, and graduated high school with a 4.0. Although he did well in all his subjects, he noticed from an early age that he always felt especially excited or passionate when he was teaching others about nature. Bob decided to go to college to pursue these interests and spent 4 years at Humboldt State University, where he found a group of “naturalist nerds” to hang out with and learn from. They spent many weekends in the forests together looking for salamanders, birdwatching, or hiking through the redwood forests.
After Bob graduated, he spent 3 years doing work with wildlife around the world, including tropical birds in the Amazon, endangered birds in New Zealand, Alaska, and Australia, and baboons in Namibia. Bob then got his Masters from Humboldt State University, studying how birds help eat insect pests in Kenyan coffee farms. While getting his masters, Bob met a fellow biology student named Megan, and after dating for 8 years, they were married in 2021. During COVID, Bob lost his job teaching in Yellowstone, and he and Megan returned to Washington to live with his parents and build a Tiny House. Megan and Bob then moved to Reno, Nevada, where he found a job teaching ecology to college students in the Sierra Mountains.
During the last 8 years, Bob has led study-abroad programs for Round River Conservation Studies that eventually brought him to the Darhad Valley, where he fell in love with its people and wildlife. He hopes to continue spending time with Tumursukh and the rangers who are some of the most inspirational and dedicated protectors of nature he has met, and with the rest of the Darhad locals who form one of the strongest communities he has seen anywhere in the world.
