How We Walk with the Land and Water (How We Walk) is a collaborative land relationship initiative between Carcross/Tagish First Nation, Kwanlin Dun First Nation, and Ta’an Kwachan Council. The purpose of How We Walk is to prepare for regional land and water planning through the creation of a unified First Nation vision for the Southern Lakes Region- the headwaters of the Yukon River. Round River supports How We Walk, through collaboratively developing a mapped land vision that displays ecological and cultural values across the combined territories of each Nation. We have supported How We Walk since its inception in 2017 and continue to engage in efforts to further the stewardship of the Southern Lakes Region.
We provide landscape-level modeling and spatial analysis to support the land use planning process for the Southern Lakes Region of the Yukon. We incorporate Indigenous land-use and cultural data, focal species habitat models, ecological values, hydrological values, and human impacts mapping into landscape-wide spatial products to inform conservation planning.
Our work supports a multi-Nation collaboration between Carcross/Tagish First Nation, Kwanlin Dün First Nation, and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council.
We lead the development of several technical products for How we Walk. These include habitat suitability models that are based in Indigenous Knowledge of the Southern Lakes wildlife and habitat, aquatic classifications, and harvesting models that map the intersection of Indigenous use and high-quality habitat. These (and other) technical products will contribute to a decision support tool that will support How We Walk staff and community members in developing a land relationship vision for land use planning.
We work closely with First nations staff, citizens, and steering committee members to help guide and refine our efforts. This includes community workshops and events to review technical produces, provide feedback, and help shape the vision of How We Walk.
