Born and raised in Minnesota, Jeff Muntifering has spent more than 20 years teaching, conducting research and leading conservation programs in America, Africa and Asia. Jeff has been based in Namibia since 1999 where he initially studied cheetah ecology with the Cheetah Conservation Fund before joining Save the Rhino Trust in 2003 in the remote northwest region. His applied interdisciplinary research bridging the ecological, political, social and psychological dimension of black rhino conservation has helped inform a variety of innovative management policies and practices including community-based monitoring programs, outreach campaigns, eco-tourism protocols, reintroduction strategies and community land planning. Jeff led Round River’s Namibia program between 2004 and 2009 including student programs and the Kunene Regional Ecological Assessment. Jeff has also spent significant time in China collaborating on South China tiger and Asian wild horse recovery efforts. Jeff obtained a PhD from Stellenbosch University, is an adjunct professor at Namibia University of Science and Technology, and a visiting lecturer at Beijing Forestry University in China. He currently resides on the Namibian coast with his wife Basilia and their two children.
