Beatriz “Bia” Alves

Botswana Program Instructor

Bia is a veterinarian and conservation scientist with over 15 years of experience spanning clinical practice, wildlife health, conservation medicine and field research across Europe and Africa, including Botswana. A major focus of her career has been felid conservation, particularly the Iberian lynx and European wildcat, combining veterinary medicine with research, disease surveillance and conservation management. She holds a PhD in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution from the University of Porto and a Master’s degree in Conservation Medicine from the University of Edinburgh. Her field experience includes wildlife capture and anaesthesia, health assessments, biological sampling, GPS telemetry, disease surveillance, biodiversity monitoring and species translocations. 

Bia is passionate about One Health, practical conservation and sharing her experience with the next generation of conservationists. She enjoys photography, hiking, swimming, reading and spending time in nature.
