Alumni Spotlight

Drew Chambers, Taku ’08

I did the Taku program in 2008, and worked as an intern with the Idaho wolverine project in 2011. Something Doug Milek said in conversation in our cabin in Atlin way back then has stuck with me through my 20s and 30s, as I tried to find my path in life. To paraphrase, “I wish some people would take the tens of thousands of dollars they’re going to spend getting an advanced degree, and try to start something that would make a difference in their community.”

Well, after a decade and a half working as a farmer, carpenter, and baker, I’m starting a bakery where I live here in Belfast, ME. I am enthused about using local, organic, whole grains to make delicious, nutritious breads for my community, and help feed all those folks who are putting their advanced degrees to good use for the struggle. Fellow wolverine project alum Ben Rooney lives just down the road and helps feed our community too with his hard work on an organic farm. Stop in for a loaf and a chat if you’re up this way!
